In its latest podcast, Mandrake Society Radio features the panel Freedom Train Productions presented at Fire & Ink: Cotillion.Canaries in the Mine: Black Queer Protagonists Save the World (and you too) gathered two resident playwrights along with two scholar-artists whose intersecting "offstage" work focuses on freedom stories and jazz theatre aesthetics. The struggle does not end at blackout, and in this podcast, the scholarship and art of Dr. Omi Osun and Thomas Allen Harris irrefutably continue the tradition and the fight.
"I wrote Submerged to save my life."
- Aurin Squire on the transformative power of his play developed at Freedom Train.
"It would mean there would be more people alive today."
- Sharon Bridgforth on the profound notion of jazz theatre aesthetics as a fundamental component of theatre training.
What's up next for CiM panelists:
Andre Lancaster, editor, Canaries in the Mine: play anthology and critical writings book project in development; Matthew Takes Mannahatta, a children's musical by Aurin Squire, now playing at Vital Theatre; Dr. Omi Osun, Jazz, Ase, and the Power of the Present Moment book project in development; Sharon Bridgforth, artist-in-residence at Northwestern University, reads delta dandi in November; and background on Thomas Allen Harris's film documentary projects, Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela and Through a Lens Darkly are online.
The entire Fire & Ink: Cotillion conference was beyond inspiring. Freedom Train Productions encourages its audience community to visit www.fireandink.org. There you will find the full conference schedule, photos on Facebook, and a transcript of poet Nikky Finney's brilliant keynote. Please also consider making a donation to support the next festival.
